Glass forming ability of Zr-based Zr–Cu–Ni–Al–(Ag) alloys

چکیده

Abstract A series of Zr-based glasses has been obtained by rapid melt quenching and their thermal characteristics ( T g , x l ) were determined DSC/DTA. Some the most recognized glass forming ability (GFA) criteria applied to predict alloys study its dependence on alloy composition. As a result, best compositions among studied could be selected. It was found that as general trend an increase Zr content results in Δ (= − decrease. The liquidus temperatures chosen with substantially different vary relatively little. Therefore, it concluded variation GFA is mainly due difficulties crystallization process, rather than stability melts.

Electrochemical properties of bulk glass-forming Zr-based alloys

tive high potential for applications. Bulk amorphous Zr-based alloys exhibit interesting mechanical properties, i.e. extremely high yield strength combined with a relatively low Young’s modulus at ambient temperatures as well as Newtonian flow in the supercooled liquid state [3]. However, applications of these materials require also high stability in various environments in order to ensure an a...

New Zr-based Glass-Forming Alloys Containing Gd and Sm

The effect of minor additions of Gd and Sm on the glass-forming ability (GFA) of Cu-Zr-Al alloys is investigated here. The rationale for these additions is the fact that the atomic size distribution can increase GFA by changing the topology of the alloy as a function of cluster stability, which is tied to the electronegativity and ionic and covalent nature of alloys. Ingots with nominal composi...

Interfacial Free Energy Controlling Glass-Forming Ability of Cu-Zr Alloys

Glass is a freezing phase of a deeply supercooled liquid. Despite its simple definition, the origin of glass forming ability (GFA) is still ambiguous, even for binary Cu-Zr alloys. Here, we directly study the stability of the supercooled Cu-Zr liquids where we find that Cu64Zr36 at a supercooled temperature shows deeper undercoolability and longer persistence than other neighbouring composition...

On the glass forming ability of liquid alloys.

By using the concepts of the short-range order (SRO) and middle-range order (MRO) characterizing structures, an attempt has been made to describe the glass forming ability (GFA) of liquid alloys. This includes the effect of more than two kinds of SRO in the liquid caused by the addition of second and third elements to a metallic solvent. The minimum solute concentration is related to the atomic...

The glass-forming ability of model metal-metalloid alloys.

Bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) are amorphous alloys with desirable mechanical properties and processing capabilities. To date, the design of new BMGs has largely employed empirical rules and trial-and-error experimental approaches. Ab initio computational methods are currently prohibitively slow to be practically used in searching the vast space of possible atomic combinations for bulk glass form...
